Mountains as Biodiversity Hotspots

Changes in altitude, temperature, and geology take place over very short distances on mountains. These changes create many different ecosystems — from tropical jungle to snowfield — on a single mountain. Each ecosystem supports many different plants and animals, creating high biodiversity. Many of these plants and animals are only found in the isolated shelter of mountains because they have been eliminated from the lowlands.
