Chiraito

Common name: Swertia
Nepali name: Chiraito
Latin name: Swertia chiraita
Family: Gentianaceae

Description:
Chiraito is a medicinal herb which can reach the height of one meter. It can be found growing in broadleaf forests and on open slopes all along the Himalayan Mountains, from 1,600 to 2,500 meters. Several different species of chirato (about 16 species are recorded) are found in Nepal.

Medicinal value:
The whole plant contains "Chiratin," a bitter-tasting chemical used for medicinal purposes. It is used to treat stomachaches, constipation, and excess urination; to eliminate parasites; and to prevent or treat malaria. Due to high demand, natural populations of chiraito are threatened in Nepal.

Nursery practice:
Chiraito can be propagated in the nursery by seed. Many farmers in Nepal have cultivated chiraito on their private land because of its good market price and high demand.
