Mountains as Homelands

One out of every ten people in the world lives in the mountains. Throughout history mountain people have had to adjust their lifestyle to a rugged environment. They have developed unique methods for using native plants and animals and for growing crops and breeding livestock in order to survive. Because of geography, mountain communities are often isolated-and different-from one another and from the communities of the lowlands. This combination of factors has created high cultural diversity in mountain communities.
