Mountains as Sources of Natural Resources

Mountain forests are important sources of wood and other products. Wood collected from mountain forests is used for cooking and heating in mountain and surrounding lowland homes. Timber is used locally or sold for construction and paper-making. Non-Timber Forest Products include the hundreds of native plants that have traditionally provided people living on mountains and around the world with food (i.e, mushrooms), medicine (i.e., ginseng) and other useful products (i.e., rope, baskets, jewelry). Mountain people rely on these wood and non-wood products for survival and as sources of income. Unfortunately, the unsustainable harvesting of wood and Non-Timber Forest Products and the clearing of land for agriculture have threatened the survival of these products and of mountain economies.
