Mountains as Playgrounds Millions of people visit mountains each year to ski, mountain bike, hike, climb, fish, kayak, and swim. Tourism is a good thing if it brings money and jobs to a mountain area. Unfortunately, tourism can also be harmful to the environment and culture of mountainous regions. For example, developers cut into mountains to construct buildings (hotels and restaurants) and roads so tourists can get to the mountains. Also, trees are cleared to make way for ski lifts and trails. These actions can cause soil, water, and air pollution. |
