GHANA from A to Z
A is for Accra. The Capital of Ghana.
B is for British. Ghana was once a British colony.
C is for Cacao which is Ghana's chief export and is used to make
chocolate.
D is for Damba which is a festival celebrated by the people of
Northern Ghana.
E is for English which is the official language of Ghana.
F is for Fufu which is a kind of food eaten in Ghana.
G is for Gold which is mined there.
H is for Hippos. The endangered Pygmy Hippos are found in the lowlands
of Southern Ghana.
I is for Ivory. Ivory trade was one of the reasons that Europeans
came to Ghana.
J is for Junior Secondary School. 12 to 15 year olds attend junior
secondary school. 6 to 12 year olds attend primary school. Kindergarten
is for 4 to 6 year olds.
K is for Kente cloth which is the most popular cloth for special
occasions. Our sashes use Kente cloth designs.
L is for Language. There are over 150 tribal languages
in Ghana.
M is for Money which is counted in Cedis.
N is for Natamas which are blouses or kabas.
O is for Oregon. Ghana is a little smaller than the US state of
Oregon.
P is for Population. There are over 17.7 million people in Ghana.
Q is for Queen Mothers who were an important part of the ancient
political system.
R is for Rainforests which are found in the Northern one-third
of Ghana.
S is for Seasons. There are two main seasons in GhanaRainy
and Dry.
T is for Togo which is Ghana's neighbor to the East. Ghana's other
neighbors are the Ivory Coast and Burkina Fasi.
U is for the Upper East and Upper West Volta which are two of the
ten regions in Ghana.
V is for Lake Volta which is the largest lake in Ghana.
W is for Wildlife. In the game reserves you can see waterbuck,
crocodiles, manatees, lions, leopards, and over 300 species of birds.
X is for Exports. Cacao, gold, timber, bauxite, and diamonds are
all exports of Ghana.
Y is for Yams which can be cooked and mashed into a ball to make
Fufu.
Z is for Zebra which travel in herds on the savannah or grasslands.
