Hooked on Hydroponics Awards

In order to qualify for this grant, you'll need to verify that your facility can accommodate indoor gardening equipment. Here's what's required.

1) Electrical load. In the equipment package description listed below you will find approximate amperage for that package. Check with your facilities manager to determine if the electrical circuit you're planning to use can safely accommodate the electrical load of the equipment.

2) Light fixture support. Hardware for suspending fixtures over growing units is included, but you need to be sure that there is adequate strength in the ceiling beams/structure to support the weight of the fixtures.

3) Dimensions.

Middle Schools

Classroom Uses
You can change the bulb in the fixture from metal halide to sodium. The metal halide lamp provides light from the blue spectrum for growth, and can be used as the sole source of light for indoor plants; the light from a sodium lamp is from the red spectrum, which boosts flowering. The growing area provided by this light is quite large. The flood-and-drain system is suitable for growing all kinds of plants.

This package includes two growing units, allowing for side-by-side trials or friendly classroom competitions. Students will also have the opportunity to compare plant responses to the two kinds of light.
