Reading with Seeds

Overview

Students practice reading comprehension using seed packets and catalogs.

Standards (Microsoft Word Document)

Materials:

Background

In general, seeds require moist, warm conditions to germinate and grow, while planting depth, spacing, and other conditions may vary. Some plants grow best if started from seed indoors and then transplanted as seedlings to an outdoor garden. Others grow better when planted directly in outdoor gardens. Some seeds require special treatment, such as exposure to cold temperatures or heat (e.g., fire), or having the seed coat scarified (e.g., scratched) before they will germinate. Seed packets generally provide information to help gardeners maximize their success in growing those seeds.

Laying the Groundwork

Ask students, What do seeds need to grow? Do all seeds require the same things? How can we find out the best way to plant a particular kind of seed?

Exploration

1. Distribute seed packets or catalogs along with copies of the Let’s Grow worksheet to the class. Alternatively, you can have students go to http://www.reneesgarden.com/index.htm, click on "Online Catalog," choose a plant, then click on “How to Plant & Grow” to access growers’ planting information.

2. Have students complete the worksheet. It will be helpful to have several calendars on hand for reference.

3. As a class, discuss various aspects of your existing school garden (its available light, type(s) of soils, its size, your local climate, etc.). Based on their completed worksheets, ask, Could your plant succeed in our garden? Why? Why might it struggle?

Making Connections

Ask students,
- Why do you think seed companies include growing information on seed packets? What could you do if you had seeds that didn’t come with this information?

Branching Out

- Ask students to make a list of the information they think they need in order to successfully grow plants from seed. Next, have them choose a favorite vegetable or flower then research this information for that plant. Finally, engage their creativity by asking them to design an attractive seed packet that includes the information along with a drawing of the plant.

- Research the history of the U.S. seed industry. Make sure students address the question, What is the seed industry’s current impact on our economy? Visit the USDA's Web site to start your research.
