Kidsgardening Photo Contest

The deadline for entries was October 1, 2007. Winners will be notified by Friday, October 19, and will be announced on Kidsgardening.org by Monday, October 22. Thanks for participating!


Attention photographers! The National Gardening Association (NGA) announces the revival of the Kidsgardening Photo Contest.

  • A total of six prizes in two categories will be awarded.
  • Winning photos will be featured in a gallery here on Kidsgardening.org.
  • Any entry may be featured on NGA Web sites and in our print publications.

Contest Categories

Photos may be submitted in two categories:

1. School and community gardens
2. Home gardens

Images to Capture

We are looking for pictures of kids (individuals or small groups) engaged with plants and gardens. Save your special rose shot for another contest if it doesn't include children. Consider the following topic areas to guide your photo selections:

• observing, measuring, journaling
• planting
• setting up experiments
• garden designs/features (e.g., raised beds)
• specific flowers, vegetables, herbs
• theme gardens (e.g., Native American)
• garden creatures (e.g., worms, butterflies)
• garden art (e.g., murals, painted fences)
• garden structures (e.g., bean tepees, compost piles)
• special plants (e.g., cotton, dye plants)
• harvest "pride" shots
• indoor projects (e.g., greenhouses, GrowLabs, worm bins)



Kidsgardening Photo Contest Rules

  1. The Kidsgardening Photo Contest is limited to entries postmarked by Monday, October 1, 2007. Winners will be announced on our Web site by Monday, October 22, 2007.
  2. A maximum of 5 photos may be entered per person (entrant).
  3. Entrant must be the photographer of the photos being submitted (to avoid copyright violations).
  4. Photo format:
    • If you use a film camera, please send prints (minimum size: 4" x 6") with your entry form.
    • If you use a digital camera, in order for your entry to qualify you must save images as JPEG files to a CD (minimum size: 1600 x 1200 pixels, or from a 2 megapixel camera set at its highest resolution) and send the disk with your entry form.
  5. All photos must be in color.
  6. All subjects in each photo must be clearly identified, and each photo must be accompanied by dated Right to Use Photographic Likeness release forms signed by parents or guardians of all youngsters (under 18 years) appearing in the photo.
  7. Each photo must be accompanied by a completed Photo Contest Entry Form.
  8. All submissions should be in envelopes stapled to the corresponding entry form and release forms.
  9. There are no age restrictions for entrants, but a parent or legal guardian must sign the Entry Form for any entrant under the age of 18.
  10. Photo submissions will not be returned.
  11. Winners will be notified by mail, e-mail, or phone by Wednesday, October 19, 2007.
  12. Winning photos will be featured in a Kidsgardening online photo gallery for one month.
  13. NGA staff and immediate family members are excluded from entering this contest.
  14. Entrant must assign ownership of all copyright in each photo to NGA, without any payment by NGA.
  15. This contest is open to U.S. residents only.
  16. No purchase from NGA is necessary to participate. A purchase does not improve chances of winning.
  17. By entering the contest, each entrant agrees that NGA may use his/her name or image for contest promotion.
  18. This contest is void where prohibited by law.

Criteria Considered

Our judges, who are experienced in image production and gardening with kids, will assess each photo based on visual appeal, composition, and technical (photographic) merit.
