Starting a Community Garden on School Grounds

What better way to involve community members in your school garden then to make it a community garden? Such partnerships enrich academic learning, nurture relationships, and create a positive neighborhood environment that enhances students' lives outside of school. For inspiration, see this month’s lessons and program spotlights.

Background and Lessons

Getting Started - How to gather forces and plan your school-community partnership.

Lesson: Exploring Community Gardens - Students learn first hand what it takes to get a community garden growing and draft their own plans for a project.

Lesson: Seedfolks: A Tale of Community Gardeners - Guides students to reflect and respond to the stories of individuals -- young, old, of various ethnic roots -- who are inspired to create a neighborhood garden and discover community in the process.

Program Spotlights

Stories from three thriving school-community gardens that advise and inspire.

Sunrise Elementary School - Transforming a concrete lot into gardens, children gain the enriching experience of working with neighbors for a common cause.

Roosevelt Public School - Children share, in their own wise words, what they've learned.

Putney Central School - Visionary leadership encourages diversity to create a sustainable garden program.
