Theme: Designing Gardens and Habitats

Web Sites for Inspiration and Planning

  • School Grounds Transformation - This Canadian site is a gem. It provides support for transforming schoolyards, from plant selection to site design, and features images, plant lists, and a section for showcasing projects.

  • Evergreen - From this Canadian site's Learning Grounds page, you can download excellent resources for transforming school grounds. We particularly like these books: Design Ideas for the Outdoor Classroom: Dig it, Plant it, Build it, Paint it! and All Hands in the Dirt: A Guide to Designing and Creating Natural School Grounds.

  • Roots and Shoots School Garden - In this elementary school garden, young students (shoots) work alongside older community members (roots). Web visitors can view a map of the garden and take a virtual tour of individual theme gardens.

  • The Garden Classroom - Photos and a downloadable map reveal the exciting variety of features at this model school garden learning center. You can download a garden scavenger hunt for students to use with the map.

  • School Garden Wizard - This Web-based planning tool walks planners through all the steps for creating a sustainable learning garden that kids will love.

  • Montgomery High School's Native Plant Garden - Photos reveal how a littered, overgrown field was transformed into a vibrant native plant garden. The site features an interactive map, samples of student work, and details on how the garden has become a vital part of the curriculum.

  • Tuckahoe Discovery Schoolyard - This elementary school's outdoor classroom features a variety of thematic "rooms." A clickable map on the site takes you into each section, where you'll find photos, samples of student work, curriculum connections, and more.

  • National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitats - Great resources for designing and implementing wildlife-friendly outdoor classrooms.
